Campfire Patching Discussion

In this short video, Pratt questions when his dogged will get "patched in" on our annual Klondike hike as we sit by the campfire. 3W and Pokey Bo received the coveted Polar Bear patch earlier in the evening and are the latest Klondike hike members as of February 2021. … [Read more...]

Tough Times & Sassafras Mountain

Russell Bridge Trailhead 9-15-01

There was a period nearly 20 years ago when times were tough.  Airlines stopped flying, people stopped working, and the media spouted doom and gloom on cable TV for 24 hours a day.  It was 9/11/01 and my first impulse was to get to the wilderness.  So when the weekend came - that is exactly what we did.  Here we are at the Chattooga River trailhead in 2001. Tough times are here again – albeit in a very different scenario.  Stay at home orders are in place, schools are … [Read more...]

Rocky Mountain, North Georgia – December 22, 2018

This is a video of a December 22, 2018 backpacking trip to Rocky Mountain in North Georgia.  We hiked in a few inches of snow that came down the prior day, but most of it melted as the temps climbed to the low 40's during our hike.  Yonah Mountain can be seen at sunset in the distance.  My 13 year old son gets photo credit for many of the pics. … [Read more...]

Logging Pics – Before And After

The National Forest Service sells logging rights to timber companies. It's reality, but I'm seeing it more and more in North Georgia and Northwestern South Carolina lately. We went hiking on the Chattooga this past weekend and here's one example. The view from the trailhead looking west in September 2011. And here's the same view this weekend on August 2016. I nearly didn't recognize the trailhead - and we weren't the only ones! While we loaded our packs, we sent two other hiking groups … [Read more...]

Showers Bring Waterfalls And Flowers For Our Summer Backpacking Trip To Panthertown Valley

Panthertown Valley is one of my favorite hiking spots in North Carolina. It is located near Cashiers, NC in the western section of the State and was purchased by the Nature Conservancy from Duke Power in 1989. Panthertown is now part of the Nantahala National Forest and has been growing rapidly in popularity - especially over the last ten years. Schoolhouse Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Panthertown. When we first visited Panthertown in 2001, there was only the occasional day … [Read more...]

Episode 26: Blind Courage

In Episode 26, I speak with Director Clint Ross who is hard at work with Producer Paula O'Neal on the film adaptation of the book Blind Courage, which is based on the 1990 Appalachian Trail thru-hike of Bill Irwin - the first legally blind hiker to complete the entire Trail within a single year. In the show, Clint discusses the first draft of the screenplay, the trailer, and the upcoming plans to film the movie.  He also give us some personal insight in to Bill Irwin and how he … [Read more...]
