Around The Horn Trail

The Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head, South Carolina, is a cultural and educational center dedicated to preserving and interpreting the natural and cultural history of the Lowcountry. Located on the historic Honey Horn property, the museum provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the island’s unique coastal environment while learning about the people, plants, animals, and industries that have shaped the region. The museum’s exhibits cover a broad range of subjects, including the coastal ecosystems of South Carolina, native flora and fauna, maritime traditions, Gullah culture, and the history and development of Hilton Head Island. Much of the museum’s appeal comes from its combination of indoor exhibits and outdoor attractions, allowing visitors to learn about the Lowcountry while experiencing the landscape firsthand. The Honey Horn property itself dates back to the 18th century and contains historic buildings, gardens, open fields, wooded areas, and wetlands. As you explore the grounds, interpretive displays and historic structures provide a glimpse into the island’s agricultural and cultural past, while the surrounding landscape demonstrates how closely Hilton Head’s history is connected to its coastal environment.

The museum grounds also contain several nature trails and gardens that provide an easy way to experience the area’s wildlife and native vegetation. Depending on the season, visitors may see wading birds, songbirds, turtles, butterflies, and other wildlife along the trails and around the wetlands and gardens. The relatively flat terrain makes the property well suited for a leisurely walk, nature observation, birdwatching, and photography rather than a strenuous hike. On this visit, we followed the Around The Horn Trail to Jarvis Creek and walked just over a mile around the property, stopping to explore some of the museum’s nearby attractions, including the Discovery House, the Lab, and the gardens. The route gave us a chance to see several different aspects of the Honey Horn property without requiring a long hike, and the combination of trails, gardens, historic structures, and educational exhibits made the walk more interesting than a typical nature trail. This is an easy outing that should appeal to visitors of all ages and abilities, and it is particularly well suited for families with young children who can combine a short outdoor walk with the museum’s hands-on educational exhibits and other attractions.
