The White Wolf Inn – Stratton, Maine

This is the view from the back upper deck of the White Wolf Inn in Stratton, Maine. During my 1994 thru-hike, I stayed here with another hiker named Harry and his dog Jade. When I returned to this area to hike the Crocker Mountains in 2012, we had both breakfast and dinner at the White Wolf Inn, but stayed at the Stratton Motel which is seen in the distance. … [Read more...]

The Soggy Bottom Boys

We hiked 8.2 miles across North and South Crocker Mountain in the rain and finally reached Caribou Valley Road after eight hours on the Appalachian Trail.  We had fully loaded backpacks, but it took us eight hours to cover the distance.  Maine is the real deal.  … [Read more...]

Crocker Cirque Campsite

This is the Crocker Cirque Campsite on the Appalachian Trail located between South Crocker Mountain and Caribou Valley Road. The site sits in a glacial bowl with a small pond, some tent platforms, a spring, and a privy. We planned to camp here during our hike across North and South Crocker Mountain but the heavy fall rains had us head in to town early. It's a shame because this looked like a really nice campsite and the fall colors were near peak. … [Read more...]

South Crocker Mountain, “No rain, no pain, no Maine”

Here's a video of Brett celebrating the successful climb as the rains temporarily let up. … [Read more...]

Andrew Skurka “Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide” Video

This is basically an advertisement for Andrew Skurka's new book "The Ultimate Hiker's Gear Guide," but it's well done - enough to share it. I gotta interview this guy for a podcast some day. He has to have some great stories to tell. … [Read more...]

Episode 9: Crocker Mountains (P1)

In Episode 9, Jim (aka Country Club) and Roger (aka The Camel) talk about our recent hike along the Appalachian Trail near Stratton, Maine. This is the first of a two part series that recaps our October 2012 backpacking trip in New England. During our three day trip, we battled nasty weather and didn't see a ray of sunshine as we hiked over North & South Crocker Mountain. The steep, wet terrain and rocky descent to the Crocker Cirque Campsite had us averaging about a mile an hour - which … [Read more...]
