Highlights:

Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area is a picturesque outdoor destination nestled in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests in the mountains of North Georgia. Located near the small mountain community of Suches, approximately 80 miles north of Atlanta, the recreation area is known for its peaceful setting, forested mountain slopes, and variety of outdoor activities. At the heart of the area is an 18-acre lake named after General Winfield Scott, a prominent United States Army officer who served during the 19th century. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 2,854 feet, the lake enjoys cooler temperatures than the surrounding lowlands, making it a particularly pleasant destination during the summer months. The surrounding hardwood forests provide welcome shade, while the changing foliage creates a colorful landscape in the fall. Visitors can enjoy fishing, picnicking, camping, and hiking, all within a scenic mountain setting. The recreation area is also conveniently located near several popular hiking routes, including access trails to the Appalachian Trail, which stretches more than 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. With its combination of mountain scenery, quiet waters, and convenient access to the surrounding national forest, Lake Winfield Scott is an appealing destination for families, campers, and hikers looking to experience the natural beauty of the southern Appalachians.

This hike begins at the Lake Winfield Scott campground, where we stayed overnight, and follows an approximately 0.9-mile loop around the lake. The relatively short route provides an easy and enjoyable way to explore the shoreline while taking in views of the surrounding mountains and forest. Along the way, hikers can appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the lake, watch for birds and other wildlife, and enjoy the changing scenery reflected in the water. The trail is open year-round, although conditions may vary with the weather and season. Fishing is also a popular activity here, and visitors may see anglers casting from the shoreline or enjoying a quiet morning beside the water. Because the loop is short and generally easy to navigate, it is particularly well suited to families with young children, beginning hikers, and campers looking for a relaxing walk close to their campsite. Those seeking a longer or more challenging outing can explore the Jarrard Gap or Slaughter Gap trails, both of which are accessible from the recreation area and provide routes to the Appalachian Trail. These trails offer a more strenuous mountain hiking experience, with forested climbs and opportunities to explore the surrounding wilderness. Whether enjoyed as a brief lakeside stroll or as the starting point for a longer adventure into the North Georgia mountains, Lake Winfield Scott offers a rewarding outdoor experience for visitors of a variety of ages and abilities.
