Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area is a picturesque outdoor destination located in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests in the North Georgia mountains. This area is known for its serene beauty, diverse recreational opportunities, and proximity to popular hiking trails and natural attractions – including the 2000+ Appalachian Trail.. The lake is located near Suches, Georgia which is about 80 miles north of Atlanta. Lake Winfield Scott is a 18-acre Lake Winfield Scott named after General Winfield Scott – a prominent figure in the U.S. military during the 19th century. The lake sits at an elevation of about 2,854 feet, providing cool temperatures and beautiful views, especially in the fall.
On this hike, we walked from the campground (where we stayed for the night) and hiked a 0.9 mile loop around Lake Winfield Scott. The trail is open year round and is also popular with fisherman. The trail is also very family friendly – especially for those with young children. Those seeking a longer and more challenging hike can the Jarrard Gap or Slaughter Gap trails which are accessible from the recreational area and both access the Appalachian Trail.
