FRAZIER DISCOVERY TRAIL
Shenandoah National Park
3655 U.S. Highway 211 East
Luray, VA 22835
540 999-3500
Shenandoah National Park is located in northwestern Virginia and is long and narrow and surrounds a portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the ridgeline, there are expansive views to the Shenandoah River Valley to the west and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont to the east. Skyline Drive is the main road through the park and it provides frequent opportunities to enjoy scenic views via waysides and pullouts. Trails are also easy to access from the main road and there are many in the park. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain in Shenandoah National Park at 4,051 feet.
This short loop hike starts at the Loft Mountain Wayside Parking Area (mile 79.5) and is a great family hike. Cross Skyline Drive and follow the blue-blazed Frazier Discovery Trail for about half a mile until it intersections with the Appalachian Trail on the ridgeline. There are some interesting rock features on the climb to the ridgeline, and outstanding views when you reach the A.T. Continue on for ~0.7 miles to complete the loop and return to Skyline Drive and the Loft Mountain Wayside. No dogs are permitted on this trail – since there is a lot of wildlife in the backcountry, especially deer.
