Prairie State Park is located in southwestern Missouri, near Mindenmines, and is the largest remaining tallgrass prairie in the state, covering about 4,000 acres. The park preserves a rare and vital ecosystem that once covered much of the central United States. It protects one of the largest remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in Missouri and is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including a free-ranging bison herd. The visitor’s center features educational exhibits on prairie ecology, conservation, and the history of the region. The park also has several hiking trails – including Sandstone Trail, Drover’s Trail, and Coyote Trail which allow visitors to explore the prairie landscape.
This loop hike starts at the visitor’s center and loops to the east through the prairie which is east of the building. The trail winds through wide open with views in all directions across the rolling fields. You are likely to see Bison roaming in the prairie a short distance from (or even on) the trail, so check with the park service before you depart to confirm they are in areas where they pose no danger during your hike.
