Highlights:

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is one of the premier outdoor destinations in the American West, encompassing roughly 756,000 acres of dramatic alpine terrain in central Idaho. Anchored by the jagged skyline of the Sawtooth Mountains and complemented by the quieter beauty of the White Cloud Mountains and Boulder Mountains, the area offers a remarkable diversity of landscapes. Visitors can explore more than 700 miles of hiking trails that wind through dense forests, open meadows, and granite basins dotted with over 300 high-alpine lakes. With more than 40 peaks rising above 10,000 feet, the region provides endless opportunities for both casual hikers and experienced climbers. Well-known routes like the Alice-Toxaway Loop, Sawtooth Lake Trail, and Goat Lake showcase some of the most iconic scenery, while campgrounds at Redfish Lake, Stanley Lake, and Alturas Lake provide accessible base camps for extended adventures in the wilderness.

One of the more approachable yet rewarding hikes in the area begins near Stanley and leads to the serene Bench Lakes, a chain of four picturesque alpine lakes tucked into a glacially carved basin west of Redfish Lake. Starting from the visitor center near Redfish Lake, hikers follow the Redfish Lake Trail before branching off onto a short side trail that climbs gradually to the lakes, covering about 3.1 miles one way. The route gains elevation steadily to around 6,840 feet, offering intermittent views of the surrounding peaks and forested valleys along the way. Compared to some of the more famous hikes in the SNRA, the Bench Lakes trail sees lighter foot traffic, making it an excellent option for those seeking a quieter experience without sacrificing scenery. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with crystal-clear water, granite backdrops, and peaceful shoreline spots that invite exploration, relaxation, or simply taking in the stillness of Idaho’s high country.
