Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie Island is a remote barrier island tucked between Hilton Head Island and Savannah and is considered the southernmost inhabited sea island in South Carolina. Roughly five miles long, the island is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Calibogue Sound, and the Intracoastal Waterway, giving it a secluded feel that has helped preserve much of its natural beauty and historic character. With no bridge connecting it to the mainland, visitors arrive only by ferry or private boat, adding to the island’s quiet and laid-back atmosphere. Daufuskie is especially known for its deep Gullah heritage, with descendants of formerly enslaved West Africans maintaining traditions that have shaped the island’s culture for generations. Historic churches, old schools, dirt roads shaded by massive live oaks, and quiet stretches of untouched beach all contribute to the island’s distinctive Lowcountry charm.

This beach hike along Calibogue Sound begins near the Melrose Beach Club & Pool and follows the shoreline south toward the once-grand Melrose Inn, a resort property heavily damaged by hurricane flooding and years of neglect. Although the inn remains closed, rumors of redevelopment and restoration plans continue to circulate among locals and visitors. The walk itself is scenic and peaceful, with wide sandy beaches, rolling dunes, sea oats, and frequent views across the sound toward Hilton Head Island. On clear days, you can easily spot the iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse within Sea Pines Resort as boats move through the calm waters of Calibogue Sound. Depending on the tide, the beach can become remarkably broad, creating excellent opportunities for shelling, birdwatching, and long uninterrupted walks along one of the quieter coastlines in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
