Springfield Trail

The Anne Springs Close Greenway is a 2,100-acre nature preserve located just outside Fort Mill near Rock Hill, South Carolina, and is one of the region’s premier destinations for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, paddling, and wildlife observation. The Springfield Loop is a pleasant 2.3-mile hike that provides an excellent introduction to the Greenway’s diverse landscapes without requiring a strenuous effort. Beginning at the historic Dairy Barn trailhead, start the loop by hiking counter-clockwise as the trail heads south through a mixed hardwood and pine forest. The wide, well-maintained path is shared with mountain bikers, so keeping dogs on a leash and remaining alert around corners is recommended. Fortunately, the trail is spacious enough for hikers and cyclists to pass comfortably, making it an enjoyable experience for everyone. As you leave the trailhead behind, the sounds of the nearby recreation areas quickly fade, replaced by birdsong, rustling leaves, and the peaceful atmosphere that has made the Greenway a favorite escape for both locals and visitors.

After a gentle beginning, the Springfield Trail climbs a modest wooded ridge before descending gradually toward Steele Creek. The elevation changes are never demanding, making this an ideal hike for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking for a relaxing outing in nature. About halfway through the loop, you’ll reach the swinging bridge spanning Steele Creek at approximately 550 feet above sea level. Crossing the suspended wooden bridge is one of the highlights of the hike, offering a bit of adventure and beautiful views of the clear, slow-moving water below. Some dogs may hesitate before stepping onto the gently swaying bridge, but most quickly gain confidence and enjoy the crossing. Along the creek, the surrounding forest is filled with mature white oaks, hickories, loblolly pines, and scattered flowering dogwoods, creating welcome shade during the warmer months. Deer, turtles, woodpeckers, and numerous songbirds are frequently spotted in this quiet section of the Greenway. After crossing Steele Creek, the trail gradually turns north and meanders through more rolling woodland before returning to the Dairy Barn, completing a scenic loop that showcases the natural beauty and tranquility of the Anne Springs Close Greenway.
