McDowell Nature Preserve is a 1107 acre undeveloped and mostly forested area in South Charlotte which is located right on the border with South Carolina. The McDowell Nature Center serves as the gateway to the McDowell Nature Preserve and is the source of educational programs and information on the preserve’s flora and fauna. The preserve, the oldest in Mecklenburg County, has been left 90% undeveloped and protects mostly forested, rolling terrain along the banks of Lake Wylie
This is an easy 0.9 mile hike that connects the campground and picnic area. The trail follows the shore of Lake Wylie with views across the lake. It’s suitable for children and there is a nice picnic facility on the route with easy access from a nearby parking area.
