Casco Bay

Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is located near Freeport, Maine but sits on a salt marsh estuary along the rocky shorelines of Casco Bays and the Harraseeket River. Despite the proximity to town, the park offers a nice respite from Freeport’s busy shopping district and has more than 200 acres to roam – thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence M.C. Smith who donated the land to the State of Maine in 1969. The park contains campsites and cabins on the bay and traverses a variety of ecosystems including climax white pine and hemlock forests.

Casco Bay is a picturesque inlet of the Gulf of Maine, located along the southern coast of Maine at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park. It spans from Cape Elizabeth in the south to Small Point in the north, encompassing numerous islands, peninsulas, and harbors. The bay is known for its natural beauty, rich maritime history, and vibrant communities.  The popular Middle Bay Trail by the bay carries visitors along Maine’s legendary coast and through some of the park’s campsites. On our hike we walked along the river, by the coast, and through some of the fields in the park. This is an easy day hike that is suitable for all ages.
