Boardwalk River Trail

The Chattahoochee Nature Center is a private, nonprofit environmental education facility located in Roswell, Georgia, along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Founded to promote conservation awareness and hands-on learning, the center sits within a protected stretch of river floodplain forest that provides an accessible introduction to the ecology of one of Georgia’s most important waterways. The indoor interpretive center features interactive exhibits designed for all ages, including aquariums with native fish species, displays of turtles and snakes, and educational programs that highlight river ecology, watershed health, and regional wildlife conservation. Outside, the grounds extend into a carefully managed natural habitat where visitors can observe rehabilitated wildlife and native species in semi-natural enclosures. Bald eagles, hawks, owls, and other birds of prey are among the most popular residents, and the center’s raptor programs help educate visitors about the role of these predators in maintaining ecological balance. A network of short walking trails—six in total—winds through woodlands, wetlands, and open meadow habitats, each ranging from roughly 0.16 to 0.5 miles in length. These loops provide easy access to riverfront scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities, making the center a popular destination for school groups, families, and casual hikers alike.

This hike on the River Boardwalk Trail begins across Willeo Road from the main nature center property and follows an elevated wooden boardwalk that extends into the Chattahoochee River floodplain. Clearly marked with purple blazes, the trail offers a peaceful walk through bottomland forest and wetland habitats that are periodically shaped by seasonal flooding from the river. The boardwalk design allows visitors to experience this sensitive environment up close while minimizing impact on the surrounding ecosystem. Along the way, the trail provides frequent views of the river corridor, where slow-moving water, sandbars, and riparian vegetation create habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, turtles, and amphibians. During periods of high water, however, sections of the boardwalk can become submerged or damaged, as was the case during our visit, requiring hikers to turn back before completing the full route. Even with occasional closures or limitations, the trail remains an excellent short excursion for families with young children or anyone seeking a relaxed, scenic stroll along the Chattahoochee River. Its gentle terrain, close proximity to Roswell, and immersive river views make it a quiet but rewarding complement to the more structured experience offered at the main nature center.
