Highlights:

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation manages parks, nature preserves, greenways, and recreational facilities in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, including Charlotte. They offer a variety of programs, sports leagues, fitness centers, swimming pools, and nature education activities.  Mecklenburg County has around 40 miles of trails and several great spots for hiking, mostly within its nature preserves and greenways.

The Four Mile Creek Greenway is located near downtown Matthews, North Carolina and provides access to Squirrel Lake Park and connects neighborhoods from E. John Street to S. Trade Street.. The greenway is a boardwalk and asphalt trail that passes through a mixed Loblolly and Shortleaf Pine forest that sit in a floodpain along Four Mile Creek.  On this hike, I started at the stadium west gate of the Mecklenburg Sportsplex and hiked across Four Mile Creek and around fields 1-11. It’s an easy walk along a mix of multi-use trails and paved pathways with convenient access to parking along the route.
