Twin Falls on the island of Maui should not be confused with a hike on the island of O’ahu with the same name. On Maui, Twin Falls is on the northern edge of the Koolau Forest Reserve located near the town of Haiku. The Reserve is a breathtaking area known for its lush vegetation, unique flora and fauna and serene waterfalls. This stop on the famed “Road to Hana” is the first for many vacationers and if the parking area is crowded you may want to return later in the day. There are numerous waterfalls to see on the way to Hana – but this is a worthy stop with a small parking area that is located along the Hana Highway at mile marker 2.
Twin Falls features a series of picturesque waterfalls and natural pools surrounded by lush tropical forest. The hike to Twin Falls is 1.5 miles roundtrip and is relatively easy and suitable for most skill levels. It can get muddy at times, so sturdy footwear is recommended. After a short distance from the parking area, several side trails break left and descend to Hoolawa Stream – a smaller waterfall and pool. Otherwise, continue up and into the valley passing some homesites as you climb toward the larger waterfall. The first waterfall or “Lower Falls” is easily accessible and popular for swimming. The “Upper Falls” are less crowded and more secluded but further up the trail and they are a slightly more challenging hike.
