Highlights:

Haleakalā National Park is a stunning natural treasure located on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Known for its diverse ecosystems, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking views, the park offers visitors a chance to experience both cultural and natural wonders.  “Haleakalā” means “House of the Sun,” referencing the legend of the demigod Maui capturing the sun to lengthen the day.  The park also features Haleakalā Crater – a vast, otherworldly volcanic basin featuring cinder cones, colorful rock formations, and panoramic views.  It is a popular destination to watch the sunrise since the summit usually has unobstructed views above the clouds.  The park is divided into two main areas: the summit area and the coastal Kīpahulu District.

Pā Ka‘oao is a small cinder cone located near the Haleakalā Visitor Center in Haleakalā National Park. It’s a lesser-known but accessible feature that offers stunning views of the surrounding volcanic landscapes and the famous Haleakalā Crater.  On this hike we took the short Pā Ka‘oao trail to the top of the small cinder cone. This is one of the highest vantage points in the park and this trail offers excellent views of the Wilderness Area. The trail starts just outside of the Haleakala Visitor Center at 9,740 feet or 2969m.  Stone shelters built by the early Hawaiians that explored Haleakala long ago are still visible from the trail. The climate can vary dramatically, so dress in layers and be prepared for temperatures that can be extremely cold to hot and humid.
