Highlights:

The Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve is a protected area on the island of Oʻahu designed to conserve native ecosystems, protect watersheds, and offer recreational opportunities. It spans over 9,000 acres and includes some of the island’s most iconic trails and landscapes, ranging from lush rainforests to ridgelines with sweeping views of the ocean and Honolulu.  Located within the Koʻolau Mountain Range, this reserve covers parts of Mānoa, Nuʻuanu, Tantalus, and other nearby areas. It is easily accessible from Honolulu.

The Aihualama Trail starts at the base of Manoa Falls and climbs a ridge for excellent views of the Upper Manoa Valley. The trail starts at the end of Mānoa Road, near the Mānoa Falls where there is a paid parking lot. The trail winds through a bamboo forest and gradually gains elevation until it reaches the ridgeline. It typically takes about 1-2 hours to complete the hike from here – depending on your pace and the time spent at the falls.  The route can be muddy at times, particularly after heavy rains, so prepare accordingly.
