Chatfield State Park is a large and diverse recreation area near Littleton, Colorado. I is centered on the 1,400-acre Chatfield Reservoir along the South Platte River, and the park offers a wide range of year-round outdoor activities only a few minutes from Denver. The park is popular for boating, fishing, paddle sports, and swimming in summer, and has an extensive network of paved and natural-surface trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There is also camping here with modern hookups, picnicking, wildlife viewing, and scenic views of the Front Range foothills – making Chatfield one of Colorado’s most accessible and versatile state parks.
The park has about 32 miles of multi-use trails, including 12 miles of paved paths that are great for hiking, walking, or running with unpaved sections through grasslands, wetlands, and along the water’s edge. The Audubon Nature Trail is a short, easy, and flat nature walk that winds through wetland and waterside habitat near the park’s reservoir – offering beautiful views of the water and the surrounding foothills along a relatively gentle dirt path. Chatfield State Park is great for casual hikes, birdwatching, and family outings. On this hike we took the Audubon Nature Trail at the park and connected it with some other trails to complete a loop back to the Waterton Road parking area.
