Highlights:

Pilot Mountain State Park is located in both Surry and Yadkin counties in North Carolina and the rock structure is a prominent natural landmark known for its distinctive geological feature called the Big Pinnacle. This quartzite monadnock rises to an elevation of 2,421 feet and has historically served as a navigational guide, earning the name “Jomeokee” or “Great Guide” from the Saura Native Americans. The park covers around 3,800 acres, and it is split into two main sections: the mountain section and the river section along the Yadkin River.

The state park offers over 15 miles of hiking trails, including the Jomeokee Trail encircling Big Pinnacle, the Ledge Spring Trail favored by climbers, and the Grindstone Trail connecting the campground to the summit.  There are 49 campsites in the campground and they are suitable for tents and trailers – each equipped with a picnic table, grill, and tent pad. Modern restroom facilities are nearby and have hot showers. The trails are rated anywhere from easy to strenuous and on this hike we chose the heavily traveled Jomeokee Trail to circle Pilot Mountain.
