The Cross Loop Trail in Palm Desert, California is a popular hiking destination known for its scenic views and the prominent cross at its summit. The trail offers hikers panoramic vistas of the Coachella Valley and the Santa Rosa Mountains. The original cross was erected in December 1981 by College of the Desert student Mark Stembler. It was later replaced with the current 16×30-foot cross, which has become a local landmark. The cross is illuminated at night, providing a guiding light for evening hikers. Many people leave notes and items at the base of the cross when they reach the summit.
Palm Desert is an extremely dry climate, so it’s essential to check the weather forecast before your hike and take plenty of water. Temperatures can be high – especially during midday. Hiking in the early morning or the late afternoon is advisable to avoid the peak heat. Hikers can expect a moderately challenging experience, with the ascent leading to the cross which has outstanding views. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for families and leashed dogs. Many locals and visitors frequent the trail, making it a lively spot for outdoor enthusiasts. You will be surprised to see the tee box and fairway of a golf course over the ridge from the summit ~1000 feet, but the views from the cross are outstanding and well worth the trek. While you can loop back to the trailhead, my hike was an out-back route that clocked in at ~3.5 miles.
