Whiskey Still Campsite to GA 190 (Mile 18)

The Pine Mountain Trail is a 23-mile-long footpath that traverses the length of the Pine Mountain Ridge in west-central Georgia, offering hikers one of the premier backpacking experiences in the state. Located within F.D. Roosevelt State Park and just a short distance from Callaway Gardens, the trail winds through a surprisingly rugged landscape of hardwood forests, pine-covered ridges, rocky outcrops, mountain streams, and scenic overlooks. Permits are required for all designated campsites, and occupancy is limited to no more than fifteen people per site at any one time. One of the most accessible overnight destinations is Whiskey Still Campsite, which is reached via an easy 0.9-mile hike from a parking area along Georgia Highway 190. From the trailhead, the Pine Mountain Trail descends gently through a quiet hardwood forest into a secluded valley where the campsite is located. The setting is shaded and protected, creating a peaceful atmosphere that makes it particularly popular with first-time backpackers and families seeking a short overnight adventure. A spring located nearby provides a convenient water source, while several level tent pads offer comfortable camping options. At the center of the campsite is a community fire pit that serves as a gathering place for hikers to socialize, share stories from the trail, and enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding forest after sunset. The combination of easy access, reliable water, and a scenic woodland setting makes Whiskey Still one of the most inviting backcountry campsites along the Pine Mountain Trail.
