Foothills Trail (Sloan Bridge to Burrell’s Ford)

The main stem of this nearly 100 mile long hiking trail extends from Table Rock State Park in Pickens County, to Oconee State Park in Oconee County. The trail crosses some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in the Southeast and provides access to Sassafrass Mountain, the highest peak in South Carolina, and to major mountain streams and breathtaking views. The Foothills Trail Conference has a detailed guidebook for the Foothills Trail, and has done a magnificent job with maintenance of the trail.

This section of the trail from Sloan Bridge to Burrell’s Ford follows a level and wooded trail for the first 3.3 miles along the East Fork of the Chattooga River to Fish Hatchery Road. From here the trail continues for 3.9 miles where it intersects with the Chattooga River Trail and Ellicott Wilderness – near the bridge at Burrell’s Ford that separates the states of Georgia and South Carolina. There is parking and a designated camping area at Burrell’s Ford, so it is a busy place on weekends.
