The 137-acre Whooping Crane Pond Conservancy is located on Hilton Head Island within Hilton Head Plantation and protects an unusual freshwater wetland habitat surrounded by the island’s developed landscape. The preserve consists primarily of a freshwater black gum, or tupelo, forested swamp and an open “savannah” swamp, with a transitional zone of dense, head-high vegetation separating the wetlands from the drier, pine-dominated uplands. This gradual transition between habitats creates a remarkably diverse environment for such a relatively small preserve. Approximately 75 species of plants and 100 species of wildlife have been identified in the area, including a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals that depend on the swamp and surrounding forests for food and shelter. The wetland itself occupies a shallow valley that formed between ancient shoreline dunes, leaving a natural depression where water collects and supports the swamp ecosystem. The combination of open wetland, dense vegetation, pine forest, and standing water makes the conservancy particularly interesting for nature observation and birding.
This pleasant hike in Hilton Head Plantation has two distinct components, beginning along the Nancy Cathcart Path before continuing onto the Whooping Crane Boardwalk. The Nancy Cathcart Path winds through a relatively dry pine forest and provides a short transition from the upland environment into the wetter landscape of the conservancy. The trail then joins the Whooping Crane Boardwalk, an impressive structure that extends into the swamp and provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the wetland without disturbing the fragile ground-level habitat. The boardwalk is an engineering feat in its own right, requiring considerable effort to construct and undoubtedly significant ongoing maintenance in Hilton Head’s humid, wet environment. As the boardwalk crosses the approximately half-mile wetland area, it passes through the open swamp and forested portions of the preserve, with several platform areas providing places to stop and observe the surroundings. These elevated viewpoints offer good opportunities to look for wading birds, songbirds, turtles, and other wildlife moving through the swamp. The combination of the short Nancy Cathcart Path and boardwalk makes for an easy and enjoyable nature hike, while the changing vegetation and elevated views provide plenty to explore despite the relatively short distance.
