Highlights:

The Boulder Ranger District is part of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests in Colorado, and it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Located in the foothills and mountains west of Boulder, Colorado, this district offers a diverse range of recreational activities and natural attractions.  Rainbow Lakes is a popular outdoor destination located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, within the Boulder Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests in Colorado. The Rainbow Lakes Trailhead offers access to a series of beautiful alpine lakes that are popular for hiking, fishing, and camping.

The Rainbow Lakes Trail is relatively short and accessible, making it a great option for families and hikers of all skill levels. The trail is about 2.6 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of around 400 feet, leading to several small, picturesque lakes nestled in a forested area.  The parking area provides access to the Rainbow Lakes and Arapaho Glacier Trails inside the Indian Peaks Wilderness, but you will follow Trail 918 to Rainbow Lakes. The trailhead is located east of the Rainbow Lakes Campground which you walk past in the first mile of the hike.

Starting at an elevation of ~10,000 feet, the trail ascends moderately from the trailhead through a forest of evergreens. The first three lakes are passed with ~300 feet of elevation gain and are all easily accessible from the trail. The last two lakes are higher in elevation and require more work to access – especially with snow on the ground.  This is a great hike in the summer months suitable for families and anyone looking to spend a few hours in the wilderness – with great views from the second and third of the Rainbow Lakes.
