Pokagon State Park is named after Leopold and Simon Pokagon, two influential leaders of the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The park was originally developed in the 1920s as part of Indiana’s state park system and has a rich history, with many structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. The park is located in northeastern Indiana, near Angola. It’s known for its rolling hills, lush forests, and scenic views of Lake James and Snow Lake. There are over 10 miles of trails that wind through forests, wetlands, and hills, offering great views and wildlife sightings. A historic inn within the park, providing comfortable lodging and dining options. There is also a campground and rustic cabins for more primitive overnight options.
This short loop hike starts at the Potawatomi Inn and follows Trail #3 to Lake Lonidaw before meeting up with Trail #6 to loop over a high ridge and return back to the starting point. The route has winter views of Lakes Lonidaw, James, and Charles West (which is a private lake) and is well marked and in excellent shape. There are at least two opportunities to relax on the boardwalk with bench setting provided in the marsh around Lake Lonidaw.
