Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation manages an extensive network of parks, nature preserves, greenways, and recreational facilities throughout Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, including the city of Charlotte and its surrounding suburbs. As one of the most comprehensive county park systems in the Southeast, it provides residents and visitors with a wide range of outdoor and recreational opportunities, from organized sports leagues and community fitness programs to nature education, environmental stewardship initiatives, swimming pools, athletic complexes, and cultural events. The county’s greenway system alone spans roughly 40 miles and continues to expand, linking neighborhoods, schools, and commercial areas with natural corridors that protect local streams and wildlife habitat. These greenways serve as important ecological buffers within an otherwise densely developed urban landscape, offering accessible spaces for walking, running, biking, and casual recreation. In addition to their recreational value, many of the county’s parks and preserves play a key role in flood control and watershed protection, particularly along creeks and tributaries that feed into larger regional river systems.
This short hike along McMullen Creek follows one of these urban greenway corridors, beginning near the intersection of NC 51 (Pineville-Matthews Road) and tracing the creek through a surprisingly natural-feeling stretch of wooded landscape. The trail is wide, well-maintained, and heavily used by local runners, walkers, and cyclists, making it one of the more popular community pathways in southern Charlotte. In several low-lying areas, the trail transitions onto raised wooden boardwalks that carry hikers over wetter sections of floodplain where McMullen Creek periodically overflows its banks after heavy rains. These elevated sections add variety to the route and provide better views of the surrounding wetlands and riparian vegetation. During the winter months, leaf cover is minimal, and nearby residential neighborhoods are more visible along portions of the trail, but in spring and summer the dense canopy of hardwoods and undergrowth largely screens the urban surroundings, creating a more immersive natural experience. Despite being located within city limits, the trail maintains a peaceful atmosphere, with the sound of flowing water, birdsong, and rustling leaves often masking the presence of nearby development. On this outing, we explored a roughly two-mile section of the creek corridor, though the greenway can easily be extended into a longer out-and-back or point-to-point hike of four miles or more for those looking to spend additional time outdoors. The combination of accessibility, natural scenery, and smooth terrain makes McMullen Creek Greenway a convenient and rewarding escape within the Charlotte metropolitan area.
