Highlights:

The Green Mountain Trail offers several different hiking opportunities within the Aska Adventure Area of North Georgia, making it one of the more versatile trail systems in the region. Hikers can choose from a variety of routes, including a loop hike from Deep Gap, a point-to-point shuttle hike descending to Blue Ridge Lake, or a longer outing that connects with the Long Branch Loop Trail. The route described here follows the popular loop beginning and ending at Deep Gap along Aska Road. Located within the Chattahoochee National Forest, the trail provides a pleasant combination of mountain scenery, moderate climbing, and quiet forest walking. Although it lacks the dramatic overlooks found on some nearby peaks, the trail’s peaceful setting and well-maintained tread make it a favorite for hikers seeking a less crowded experience in the Blue Ridge area.

The trailhead is located directly across Aska Road from the Deep Gap parking area. To begin the loop, cross the road and take the trail on the right, keeping the parking area behind you. The trail on the left, located about 50 yards farther up the road, serves as the return point later in the hike. From the start, the Green Mountain Trail climbs gradually along the southeastern slopes of Green Mountain, winding through a mature forest of oak, hickory, maple, and other hardwood species. The well-marked dirt path is generally easy to follow and gains elevation at a comfortable pace, making it suitable for a wide range of hikers. During the winter months, when leaves have fallen from the trees, numerous openings along the mountainside provide impressive views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and the valleys below. In spring and summer, the dense forest canopy offers welcome shade, while autumn brings vibrant displays of red, orange, and yellow foliage that make this section of the trail especially scenic.
